Assessment & Next Steps

Why Assessment Matters

A psychoeducational assessment explains why learning is difficult by examining cognitive, linguistic, and academic factors. The purpose is understanding, not labeling, and guiding effective instruction.

What a Psychoeducational Assessment Includes

A comprehensive assessment examines:

  • Cognitive processing (working memory, reasoning, processing speed)
  • Academic achievement (reading, spelling, writing, math)
  • Attention, emotion, and self-regulation
  • Language background and exposure (for multilingual learners)

How We Interpret Assessment Findings

We review results within the learner’s real-world context to identify:

  • Strengths (e.g., reasoning, vocabulary)
  • Vulnerabilities (e.g., phonological processing, working memory)
  • Their impact on reading fluency, writing, comprehension, and organization
  • Emotional patterns influencing motivation

Our goal is to translate complex data into clear, actionable guidance.

Understanding Scores and Profiles

  • Standard Scores: Mean = 100; typical range = 85–115
  • Percentiles: Compare performance to age peers
  • Patterns matter: Strength–weakness profiles are more meaningful than isolated numbers

We emphasize what scores mean for the learner’s daily functioning.

Collaboration with Schools and Professionals

We work with psychologists, SLPs, learning-support teachers, and classroom educators. Recommendations may include:

  • assistive technology
  • extended time
  • alternative response formats
  • strategy-based scaffolds
  • executive-function supports

We help families prepare for meetings and ensure continuity across grades.

From Data to a Clear Plan

Each instructional cycle builds on:

  • explicit instruction
  • strategic, self-regulated learning
  • progress checks
  • reflection and adjustment

This cyclical process strengthens independence, confidence, and long-term resilience.

The Phonology Instructional Cycle

Initial assessment → 12-week instructional cycle → progress review → refined goals

This structure reflects research on learning, consolidation, and self-regulation.

Emotional Context: Understanding Before Improving

Many learners arrive discouraged. Assessment reframes difficulty through clarity, validation, and constructive next steps. Integrating self-regulation and explicit strategy instruction leads to early, meaningful success that builds self-efficacy.

Schedule a Learning Profile Consultation

For families with an existing assessment, we provide a detailed consultation that translates findings into targeted, evidence-based instructional recommendations.
